When attachments are opened in Outlook they are cached in a temporary folder. This folder is called the “Outlook Secure Temp Folder”
If you open an attachment from an email, make changed and then presses ‘Save’ (not save as) the changes may be saved into their temporary folder.
If you need to access the modified document you could try checking this folder.
The path to this folder changes depending on which version of Windows and Office you have installed. You will need to check the registry to get the folder path.
- Open the registry editor (Start -> regedit)
- Navigate to the path below for your version of Outlook

- Open the ‘OutlookSecureTempFolder’ registry key and take note of the path
- Navigate to the folder path.
