[SOLVED] Excel – ‘Cannot shift objects off sheet’ error message

Problem:

When attempting to insert a new row in an Excel document you receive an error message saying ‘Cannot shift objects off sheet’ and Excel fails to add the new row.

Applies to: Excel 2008, Excel 2007, Excel 2010

Solution:

Excel 2008:

  1. With the Excel document open
  2. Select the ‘Excel’ menu then select ‘Preferences’
  3. MSExcel2008-CannotShift2
  4. Select the ‘View’ option
  5. Under ‘For objects, show’ select ‘All’
  6. MSExcel2008-CannotShift3
  7. Click ‘OK’ to save the changes

Excel 2007

  1. With the Excel document open
  2. Select the ‘Office’ menu followed by ‘Excel Options’
  3. Excel2007-r1c1-1
  4. Select the ‘Advanced’ menu
  5. Scroll down to ‘Display options for this workbook’
  6. Under ‘For objects, show’ select ‘All’
  7. MSExcel2007-CannotShift4
  8. Click ‘OK’ to save the changes
