The following steps show how to set VLC Media Player as the default video player in Ubuntu 18.04.
It assumes you already have VLC installed, if you do not see How to install VLC Media Player using terminal.
- Click on the arrow at the top right of the screen
- Click on the ‘Settings’ icon
- Using the left hand menu, open ‘Details’ then ‘Default Applications’
- Change ‘Video’ to ‘VLC Media Player’ (you may also want to do the same for ‘Music’)
- Close the window the save the changes.
The OLD Ubuntu 16.04 way …
- Click on the ‘System Settings’ icon in the launcher

- Click on the ‘Details‘ icon
- ” alt=”” aria-hidden=”true” />
- Select ‘Default Applications’ in the left hand menu
- Set ‘Video’ to ‘VLC media player’ (you may also want to do the same for ‘Music’).

- Close the window the save the changes.
